I think that COS is a great opportunity for students in our THR class to bring their ideas to the forefront. I have been brainstorming some ideas for what could possibly be my project idea for my documentary.
I think its really interesting to see how the media depicts sex and how these ideas are consumed by society. One idea for my documentary would be to study how the media portrays sex. There are a lot of images and messages immersed in our environment. Some are more noticeable than others. How is sex used to market certain products and to what degree is it crossing the line? The idea of sex is used loosely in American media. How has the definition changed? Are there any more taboos about discussing this topic? Has sex dominated our conversations and forms of media consumption? Has the media distorted the traditional idea of sex?
I can use different types of advertisements that have an underlying message themed around sex and using sex as a means of sales. There is a lot of advertisements both print and digital that use subtle messages and images that represent the idea of sex in order to commit to the sale. Are consumers buying into these ideas? Are they effective? This is just a start...if you guys have any suggestions or advice that would be great!
