Yellow Lantern - Fear

The officail name of the Yellow Lanterns is the Sinestro Corps (named after its' founder and leader Sinestro). Like the Green Lanterns, their rings work in a similar fashion, with the exception that their rings isn't fueled by willpower but by fear instead. When they charge their rings their oath goes as follows:

In blackest day, in brightest night
Beware you fears made into light
Let those who try to stop what's right
Burn like his power...
Sinestro's might

In the Green Lantern Universe the yellow light (those of the Sinestro Corps), represents Fear. The members of this corps are choosen due to their abilty to install great fear. Now fear can be a power thing, not just in the relam of comics but in one's own life. Where as willpower can liberate one, fear can constrain one, forcing one to do things against their will. This is probably why the Green Lantern Corps (willpower) and the Sinestro Corps (fear) are seen as rivals and thus complete opposites. In the comics the two went to war against eachother will the victory of the emerald wielders.

Fear, it is present in all of our lives, eliminating choices and thus limiting our freewill. As I stated in my blog about the Green Lanterns (freewill) sometimes the will of others overshadows the individual and most of the time its' because of fear. Sometimes we follow the will of others because we fear what might happen if we don't. We live under the fear of dissapointing those we care about, fear of hurting those close to us, fear we might not succeed, fear of what may happen if we fail, fear we may no longer be accepted and our fear continues to go on. It is through fear many are made obedient (the reason we follow the law is out of consequences that will be made if we voilate those laws).

It is through willpower that we can over come our fears. Our will, the will to succeed and to endure, allows us to conjure up strength to overcome these fears and thus break free of the restraints that fear places on the individual. However one must look at fear and wonder if fear is entirely a bad thing. Yes, fear does limit us in many aspects but then again people should be limited to an certain degree. For example in a relationship of any kind, one should fear the consequences of hurting one close to them. It is because we fear the lost of someone close to us that we know of their true worth, fear is what allow us to know how much we value another. In many ways fear is a bad thing (no one wants to live paycheck to paycheck in fear of losing their house or in fear of not having enough to porvide for their children). But in many ways its' necessary because its' what keeps humanity in check (one should fear pain, suffering and therefore war) fear of endure those problems leds us to avoid such problems and find better solutions. Fear is one of those qualities that's a gift and a curse, yes it can limit us to the extent of keeping us from our true potential but then again it keeps us from living in anarchy.
