All Green Lanterns must charge their rings (a Green Lantern places his ring into a special green lantern in which the ring recharges until it's power reaches 100 percent again). While they recharge their rings they say a oath and the oath goes as follows:
In brightest day, In Blackest night.
No evil shall escape my sight.
Let those who worship evil's might.
Beware my power Green Lantern's light!
In the Green Lantern Universe the Green Light, one of the seven lights in the emotional spectrum, represents Willpower. This is how the wielders of the ring controls its' power, through pure willpower. In the comics, it is said to be the purest of all the lights, notably among all the other lights, it is in complete opposition to the yellow light which represents fear, thus the reason all Green Lanterns must be fearless upon being recuited.
Now willpower can be powerful but then again it can be weak depending on the individual. Willpower can mean two things, either it will mean self control in which one controls their own emotions and desires and thus actions. Or it can mean freewill in which everything one do is a result of their own choice. Now think for a second of the tremendous power willpower holds, not as a fictional power in a comic book, but as an attribute that guides your own life. The whole sum of your life is based on willpower, the will you hold and the will of others over you. As a child you are rasied, accoriding to the will of your parents until one day you become mature enough to follow your own will, which might be the same or different will of your parents. Now if your will is in harmony with your parents' will one must question if this is truly their own will being exercised or the will of their parents over them being exercised, although it is possible for one to have the same will of another without that will being forced upon them. Either way ones' life is still guide through will (choice). Now think about religion in terms of those who really are faithful(don't matter which one) and think about why they follow a specific religion. Do they follow the religion due to their own will, or because their parents will them to, or because the majority will them to, or because their god will them to, or is it because of fear (of any kind) that guides their will for them.
Now think back to the garden of Eden (don't worry I'm not going to get religious, whether taken as fact or myth its still worth thought). Adam and Eve were given freewill (free moral agency) even before they ate the forbbiden fruit, even that act was a decision of their will. Now God could have made them into perfect puppets but instead He gave them freewill. Adam and Eve could had been forced to be obedient but instead He wanted them to serve Him of their own choice, not because He wanted them to, but because they loved Him and therefore wanted to of their own will. Now if this is taken as truth (whether as fact or theory) then it can be assumed that love is only possible through freewill, because love is a choice and can never be forced on another. Love is not only a quality but also a choice, so for all the other qualities it can be assumed that they as well are a choice on some level. For example one may like someone but only if they feed into that emotion (which is a choice) will they ever love that person. One may dislike someone because they constantly dissapoints them or make them angry, but only if they feed into these emotions (which is a choice) will they ever hate that person.
So it can be said that will is the pride of the seven lights (emotions). Sloth, Wrath, Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Envy and Pride are the seven deadly sins but it is said that pride is the greatest of the seven. Through excess pride is all the other possible, pride is seen as the doorway that leads to all the others, its' the gateway drug to sin. Will is the same way to emotions, since all emotions are a choice on some level, only through will (choice) can we feel any emotion, its' the gateway to all we feel. This is perhaps the reason the Green Light (willpower) is seen as the purest light, because it's the quality that sets us free. If ones willpower is great enough, that person can overcome any obtacle live throws their way, can overcome any negative emotion, can accept the positive emotions, can gove one the strength to overcome oppression despite regardless of the kind. I once heard a story that an elderly person on their death bed refused to died until a family member from far away made it there, this have got to be the result of pure willpower. Perhaps because this quality is so great that a comic uses it as its central focus, an emotion that is a strength that guides other emotions.
