ARTIST BIO: KAWS

KAWS has been one of the most prominent figures in the world of art and graffiti. In the past decade he went from being a graffiti artist who was bombing the streets of NY and NJ to the successful entrepreneur that he is today. He has recently opened up OriginalFake, which is a collaborative project with Medicom Toy out in Japan. He has turned his famous logos and art from his past days as a graffiti writer into a corporate logo for his business. He produces everything from vinyl figures to clothing to skateboards to just about any other canvas he can put his icons on. Here are some of the famous works he has produced in his career.

KAWS 4 Foot Companion - This is the staple KAWS symbol. This character is basically an original KAWS design head that's on top of a Mickey Mouse body. This one is REAL expensive with a retail price of $6000 and limited to only 100 pieces.


KAWS Darth Vader - Only 1000 of these figures were made, originally costing $150 at OriginalFake in Tokyo. Resell value - upwards of $500. This is an official Star Wars licensed product.


KAWS Spongebob - KAWS unveiled this piece at his gallery exhibitio in NYC last year. This is KAWS taking a stab at modern pop culture with his rendition of everyone's favorite sponge.


KAWS Kimpsons - KAWS x The Simpsons. The Simpsons were the first cartoon to get the KAWS treatment.


KAWS Companion Dissected - With this vinyl figure you get to see the inner working of the famous companion figure.


Some original KAWS graffiti dating back to 97. As you can that's the original design of his Companion figure.

OriginalFake x Levi - This collaboration with KAWS' clothing brand OriginalFake and Levi's was released in super limited quantities. KAWS uses his Chomper graphic in this project.


KAWS Chum - This character, who resembles the Michelin Tire man, is plastered over a regular bus stop. KAWS used to not only use spray paint back in the day, but he would also go around putting his famous characters over billboards and regular street signs. Little did he know that his graffiti at the time would later be showcased in art galleries around the world.

HAROLD HUNTER DAY 3

It's been 3 years since the passing of NYC street skate legend Harold Hunter. He was a guy that everybody who was in that scene seemed to know. And when i say "scene" i mean the skate scene that flourished in the early 90's. I knew Harold Hunter personally through my older brother who at that time was heavy in the LES downtown skate scene. Harold was definitely a character, which is why his name still lives on til this day. He was such a personable, outgoing individual, who was an extremely talented skater as well. Unfortunately with the lifestyle that he lived in, their was a dark side to Harold that followed him to his grave. His addiction to partying, drinking, and drugs led him to live a short life with his death on February 17, 2006. He was found in his LES apartment due to an overdose of drugs which caused his heart to stop. Legends never die Harold. Every October we get together and skate in your name. Dark Days

Im a big fan of documentaries because it combines reality (and not the VH1 kind) and knowledge into one moving picture. I can't tell you how much insight I've gained just by watching numerous documentaries in my life. Dark Days, directed by Marc Singer, is a look into the life of the homeless who find shelter underneath NYC's MTA subway system. These people actually live underneath the train tracks, building their homes out of scrap and garbage, and sharing their living space with rats and rodents. The director, who had never shot a film before, employed the help of his homeless friends that he met to help with the production of the film, like taking care of lighting in the tunnels and how to handle a 16mm camera. It's truly amazing what one can do with a limited budget and you would never noticed that the film was made with the help of inexperienced homeless people. And with a soundtrack produced by DJ Shadow, it's definitely in my top 5 favorite documentaries, and you should check it out for yourselves.

New York!

Do yo feel as if New York is the state in which any and everything can happen?
I love NY, its vibrant and energetic and the people are not mean as everyone says they are. It is busy and can be hectic but I love the energy and all the different sites that can be explored. I love to go to Williamsburg in BK and take in all the different sites and different ppl. Great experience!

LABOR DAY FUN!

Well yesterday was a fun day labor day for me and my compadres. It all started off after a Sunday night of some free drinks, supplied by my kind and gracious bartender friend Briana. I brought up the idea of having a good ol' fashioned BBQ with the fam to my boy Teo, whom I brought along to share a pint of Guinness. Teo just moved into his new apartment RIGHT on St. Marks Place in the East Village and aside from living in such an cool neighborhood, his crib is totally awesome. He's got a ton of space for him and his roomate, and he also has access to a backyard area! He's the only tenant that has this luxury in the whole building with the door to the backyard being right in his kitchen!! So naturally Teo was down with the idea of hosting a BBQ and we immediately invited all of our closest friends to join us in the festivities. The day went off without a single problem. We picked up the grill from Kidrobot in Soho, wheeled it over to St Marks, bought all the meat and veggies from the whole foods spot, picked up a couple cases of beer, and set the dominos box down on the table. There's no better feeling, for me at least, than to be in the company of some of the people you care about most.....just relaxing, smoking, drinking, and talking shit with those that inspire me on a daily basis. I treasure my group of friends for those reasons and there was no better way that I couldve spent my Labor Day weekend!
