I watched a documentary about drag queens in New York City during the 80s called Paris is Burning, I noticed how different the drag queens all sounded from each other, and how different they sound from regular guys. One queen discussing political climate in the city has a very curly voice, and the end of his words drag out with a breathy quality. Over the curly feminine lilt was a very urban New York accent. Later, when he is an announcer at the night club, he becomes more flamboyant and his vowels become even more drawn out and curlier.
Men who imitate women find it important to savor vowels?
Other queens with thicker NY accents have some words that come out almost entirely vowellic.
