why are receptionists so awful

I really hate going to the doctor & one of the main reasons is receptionists. Why do they always seem to be so nasty? A lot of them are rude & condescending & act like you should know all of their office policies. I don't think they understand or care that if someone is calling a doctor's office they are probably sick or hurt & you should be trying to help them instead of making it worse. I worked as a receptionists answering phones for an Orthopedic Surgeon & Physical Therapy Office for over a year. I don't think I was ever rude. Maybe sometimes I couldn't help someone because I didn't know how or wasn't capable of it but I would take it upon myself to either ask someone else in the office who could help or something like that. What makes people think it's okay to take their frustrations & anger in life out on nameless people over the phone? It's not okay & I hate it & I don't understand at all. I'm sure I've asked this before but what happened to morals & manners? Do people even have consciences anymore?
