Alexander

Alexander was highly underrated in my opinion and did not receive the credit it deserved although its' not a film I expected everyone to get. Directed by Oliver Stone, the film is exactly as its' title suggests, its' about Alexander the great, his life, his conquestss and his death. This film isn't without its' flaws wheather it is due to Colin Farrell in the lead role, the insane dialect of Angelina Jolie, the long length of the film (going on to be over three hours) and other dislikes of many including the style of the film. One thing is certain (something that is rare in these kinds of films) which is accuracy. The film is historically correct as Oliver Stone is a admirer of the Macedonian King and hired certain people to make sure the film was so. What the film is best at is imagery, within the film it plays alot on classical mythology. In this way Alexander is compared to many classical heroes in myth and in turn he becomes a hero of legend. He is refered to as the son of Zeus and and many ways the film uses imagery to show that he is like a hero of classical mythology fulfilling his destiny, placing him among the greats. However to the untrained eye all these imageries are invisible and the film not apperciated. Many stated that the depiction of Alexander is also to be question (as he can be viewed just as much as a hero as a villian due to his conquests). Oliver Stone however does pull off a good depiction of Alexander with what he have (looking back on his life only facts are provided and not much about the actually man which is what Stone takes his liberties in). The character of Alexander is that of a struggle of him between his mother and father which is also seen in the imagery of the film which is brilliant. This is one of those films to be studied as it is unlikely to be full appreciate after the first view. Everything in the film is right, it really is a good film.
