As a fan of Greek Mythology I love this film but despite my own personal view on the film I will admit that it wasn't with flaws. Directed by Wolfgang Petersen, the film is based on the trojan war which uses sources such as Homer's Illiad (which means a story about troy) and Virgil's Aeneid as well as other parts of classical mythology to create the film. To start off the costumes were flawed. Most of the amor used at the time were of the wrong era, to be more specific the amor of Achillies and his men (the myrmidons) which were more modern than all the other armors in the film. Although this is a flaw in the fim it was done to give characterisics to the myrmidons. The relationship between Achilles and Patroclus was different with the two being cousins instead of best friends/lovers. most of the characters in the film are flawed in some way especially when compared to the the classical texts it derives from. Most of the details of the original story were changed for two reasons; to make the film feel real (troy is believed to have been real once upon a time however the only text that we have of it is that of mythology which is regarded as fiction) and to eliminate unnecessary parts in order to tell the story in two hours (if completely faithful to the classical text this film could had continued on for more than five hours, it is an epic after all). However despite all the flaws in the film the largest would have to be the absence of the classical gods.
Because the classical gods were not presence in the film, at least in a physical sense, much of the characters' actions comes off as foolish such as the choices of Paris and Helen whom love came off as chessy, chilidish and irrational. Without the presence of the gods (in which in mythology aprodites influenced Paris' choice to steal Helen and used her power to make the two fall in love) reasons for much of their choices seem weak and this weaken the characters in the film. the foundation of the story is based on the presences of the gods and how noble the heroes (that is the mortal characters) were compared to them. Without the gods the story is changed in a great way as weak explaination are given for the actions of certain characters because the influence of the gods must not be acknowledged because they simply do not exist outside of religion in the film. However despite the many flaws of the film (and I got plenty) the film is enjoyable and is at heart, faithful. All the major elements are present in some way and the roles of Achillies and Hector were performed greatly. To truly enjoy the film you should know the myths the stroy comes from but even if you don't its a good watch. The action is great an the setting is also great as well, the film could have been much worst.
