Free software

My problem is that my digital camera records in MP4 format. Windows movie maker does not accept this type of file. I tried downloading free converters but they all put the "watermark" logo in the middle of the videos until you actually pay for the program. Does anybody have any suggestions or do I just have to buckle and buy a program?
