Abstract

Here is my abstract for THR 403 grant writing. My idea for my documentary is going to be about how the media affects the body image of children.

Living in a commodity culture in the consumerism age, the media has become the leading influence in American society. The media reaches all demographics across the states and dictates the norms for beauty, body image, standard of living and other cultural ideas. It seems as if the media's messages have been affecting more than the targeted audiences. In the media's attempt to market to adult women, children to adolescent teenagers have proven to be one of the primary misguided consumers of the products of the media. It is a direct reflection on their perceived idea of the ideal body image. What is the media feeding the children that their parents may not be aware of? The distortion of beauty is represented through the byproducts of America's children. The images presented by the fashion industry, the toy industry, the cosmetic industry, magazines, and television are only some of the media outlets that influence the young minds of America into objectifying themselves and mirroring these images of female figures in the media.
